Detailed Description
McKinsey is looking for an experienced external contractor to act as Deputy Team Leader for an anticipated programme on sustainable forestry and land use in Southeast Asia, East and West/Central Africa (hereby referred to as ‘target geographies’).
The broad objective of the programme is to catalyse increased private investment and public-private partnerships in sustainable forestry and agriculture. The programme will also aim to support a transformation to sustainability in markets for commodities that are associated with deforestation, including timber, palm oil, soya, beef, paper and board. The programme will run for four years with possibility of extension. 
Role description:
The Deputy Team Leader oversees three regional hubs in the target geographies and a central team in London jointly with the Team Leader. The Deputy Team Leader reports to the Team Leader and Project Management Board. The position is based in London, and involves travel. 
Responsibilities:
  • Acting as a facilitator between McKinsey and the donor as well as other stakeholders involved, such as big international development agencies
  • Formulating and implementing the overall programme’s strategy and budget together with the Team Leader
  • Leading an international team of short-term and long-term consultants, advisors as well as potential subcontractors
  • Ensuring that an effective monitoring and evaluation framework is in place
  • Coordinating all planning and reporting requirements of the programme
Desired Skills
Requirements:
  • University degree in either social sciences, politics, agriculture, forestry, environmental management and conservation or other relevant field
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience in international forestry, agriculture, or land use policy and processes, combining sustainable forestry and sustainability in markets and supply chains for agricultural commodities associated with deforestation
  • Demonstrated experience of undertaking projects that are high-risk and considered environmentally and socially sensitive
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in environmental and social issues related to the forest sector, including land tenure, poverty, livelihood and gender
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in strategy development, implementation, quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation of large and complex projects
  • Proven track record of working with big international development agencies (for example, DFID, USAID or World Bank) and mobilization of public-private partnerships
  • Demonstrated experience in managing budgets and human resources under shifting conditions, including management of large and complex teams of local and international staff
  • Direct experience or familiarity with one or more of the target geographies is highly desirable

  • High level interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness to be based in the UK with possibility of travel to target geographies
  • Fluent in English (knowledge of the local language of one or more of the target geographies is considered a plus, in particular French, Swahili or Indonesian)
