Principal UX Consultant



Purpose of the Role:
  • Serve as a team member on external and internal projects, providing a support role to the lead consultant.
  • Lead complex projects under the direction and supervision of a Principal Consultant, another Senior Consultant or Research Director, or at the discretion of a Director.
  • Mentor, support and direct less senior staff on project work and proposal writing.
  • Work closely with other divisions of GfK to create winning proposals for clients.
  • Work within deadlines and budget constraints to deliver the outcome according to the project briefs.
  • Lead and develop business development in strategic business areas, and develop a portfolio of return clients.
  • Carry out a range of research activities, including: lab-based in-depth interviews, contextual studies, field research, service and workflow studies, conceptual and service design, group collaborative design, and prototyping
  • Experienced at usability lab equipment and procedures and knowledge on how to set up a mobile usability lab.
  • Ability to lead workshops to train and mentor staff for professional development.
  • May also be called upon to provide specialist skills and advice according to background experience and training (e.g. accessibility, statistical analysis, video editing, photography, sketch design).
  • Should be aware of any constraints that impact design, including technical limitations, commercial standards and interaction conventions (e.g. web, mobile, TV, services, space design and connected cities). Where knowledge is limited, research is undertaken.
  • Compile and write project deliverables, such as usability testing reports and user needs analysis documents,
  • Interest and some experience of service design and product design
  • Present deliverables back to clients in a clear professional manner and run client workshops.
  • Ensure the quality of all deliverables under their responsibility.
  • Contribute to brainstorming sessions and group meetings
  • Investigate new business areas, product concepts and carry out relevant and efficient independent research.
  • Lead in business development meetings, client pitches and marketing activities.
  • Proficient in relevant computer software such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Other software will be based on background, but may include video editing applications, mobile device software, etc.
Key Activities
  • Responsibility to colleagues:
    • Supporting coworkers
    • Working efficiently and supportively with other consultants in projects for clients.
    • Working efficiently with colleagues to create excellent pieces of research that address the client’s needs.
    • Create project and proposal costs, and recording on the CRM system and to manager
    • Being diplomatic and sensitive to colleagues’ needs at all times.
    • Address any political issues between teams or within the team with sensitivity and diplomacy, or discuss with line manager
    • Collaborate and share research ideas and business plans with the UX team
    • Direct and train less experienced staff to create meaningful work
    • Help maintain a positive and friendly team atmosphere.
  • Marketing and promotional work:
    • Client liaison
    • Performing independent research within agreed tactical areas for the business 
    • Creating case studies
    • Help develop new propositions and products with internal GfK teams and solely as part of the UX team for external clients
  • Proposal Development:
    • Complex proposal development including; Proposal writing, Preparing proposal specs with clients and team (green hatting), Putting together project pricing and timelines, Working with strategic partners and agencies to create the best proposal to meet complex briefs, Writing cost indications
    • Creating new models of working, and new techniques that meet the clients’ needs, and keeping GfK fresh and cutting edge.
  • Project Execution:
    • Ensuring project costs remain as defined in the proposal stage (where possible) and conferring with management if there are any concerns or variations from those in the proposals
    • Deliver high quality complex research, with excellent feedback from client and lead consultants at all times,
    • Inform KAMs and line manager of status and especially any issues as soon as possible.
    • Manage multiple projects and internal operations teams through all phase of implementation (study design, data collection, tabulation, quality assurance, etc.)
  • Analysis & Reporting:
    • Analyze data and use a variety of relevant tools to look for meaningful results
    • Write client research reports with less experienced team members, creating insightful and interesting reports with detailed and meaningful findings using the GfK reporting style
    • Present results to client management, when appropriate
    • Develop new forms of deliverables that best meet the client’s requirements
    • Running workshops with clients
  • Client Management:
    • Regular interaction with and senior client management (discussions, phone calls, meetings, e-mail)
    • Contribute to pitches

Technical skills required
  • Advanced knowledge of  UX techniques and services, basic knowledge of CE portfolio
  • Advanced  project management skills
  • Fluent in English
