Overview
McKinsey is in search of a practice Expert specializing in Transportation, Logistics and Distribution to join the North American Operations Practice. This client-facing role will play a key part in driving process improvement, delivering successful business results, and developing broad-based strategies for a diverse set of clients.
Detailed Description
As a member of McKinsey’s world-class Operations Practice, this Expert role will be responsible for blending strategic thinking with hands-on implementation, and advising on developing and defining operational strategies to help our global clients solve their most critical problems.  Supply Chain Management is a growing service line, focused on helping organizations build competitive advantages through the development of world-class capabilities with an eye on creating sustainable impact.  We design approaches that provide immediate impact while ensuring a sustainable, formal performance transformation through Operations, the organization and overall culture.
A Supply Chain Management Expert is both a thought leader and skilled practitioner, focused on helping our clients transform their supply chain organizations while simultaneously solving operational issues across the business enterprise.  Often, this involves fundamentally changing the corporate organization and culture to embrace lasting change. McKinsey’s teams work alongside our clients’ senior management and top talent in aggressively pursuing operational improvement.
Examples of the type of work associated this role could include:
  • Rationalize operational assets and networks
  • Diagnose and blueprint improvements for distribution center operations
  • Optimize logistics flows, including modal mix, routing, and outsourcing opportunities
  • Assess and select third party logistics providers
Desired Skills
A strong history of leading sustainable high-impact strategic supply chain initiatives, with depth in logistics, transportation and distribution, including but not limited to:
1.  Transforming operations to reduce overall supply chain spend, and improve supply chain planning, total costs, and customer service
2.  Designing and implementing global supply chain networks
3.  Warehousing process improvement, including implementing and leading lean, automation, inventory management, etc.

4.  Distribution planning and engineering, including network reconfiguration and rationalization; has ran / transformed / established a major distribution center or network of DCs
5.  Transportation management depth including Six Sigma processes managed, systems/IT, freight allocation automation, contract management and Third Party/3PL providers.
6.  Reengineering of physical product flows, and information flows to allow for optimal visibility across the end-to-end supply chain
7.  Have optimized manufacturing planning, fleet, and transportation systems and processes:
  • Exemplary experience designing end-to-end supply chain strategies
  • Demonstrated track record of assessing and driving transformational improvements with deep expertise in developing, coaching and mentoring leaders at all levels
  • Strong interest in knowledge development, i.e., contributing to articles and experiential learning with a passion for capability building
  • A proven leader in multiple situations, as exemplified by critical thinking and problem solving skills, an ability to influence and work in teams, and a resourceful, responsible, tenacious, independent, self-confident and high-energy style.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in industry or consulting environment that includes a progressive career trajectory, outstanding professional achievement and impact
  • Bachelors degree required, Masters degree with superior academic achievement preferred
  • Industry expertise in consumer, retail, industrial, and/or third party logistics provider is desired
